To be fair, part of the problem is the style, tone and structure -- the very literacy -- of such reports, which encourages or expects (at least subconsciously) the kind of statements made in the report that I find so revealing about the authors.

Still, this doesn't excuse them. Unless they live totally within their ivory towers (the University of California Davis School of Medicine and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry to be specific) or are exceedingly dull and uninformed there is simply no excuse for their ignorance.

I am referring to a report by Ulfat Shaikh, MD, MPH; Robert S. Byrd, MD, MPH and Peggy Auinger, MS. It was titled Vitamin and Mineral Supplement Use by Children and Adolescents in the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and was published recently in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, Vol. 163 (No. 2), Feb 2009.

The study found that around one third of children and adolescents take vitamin and mineral supplements. The findings came from an analysis of data from 10,828 children aged 2 to 17 who participated in the 1999 to 2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In the survey parents filled out questionnaires and participated in household interviews, and children and teens underwent medical examinations, including nutrition behavior analysis.

The study analysed children in age groups of 2-4, 5-11 and 12-17 and found that younger children were more likely to take vitamin and mineral supplements. Prevalence was 43, 37 and 27 percent respectively. The study also found that underweight children and those children with better overall diets reported greater supplement intake.

So what did the authors say about these findings? First they said: "Our results supported our hypothesis that underweight children would have the highest use of vitamin and mineral supplements," which is fine. We expect that parents of children who don't seem to be eating enough (and hence are underweight) will be more likely to want to supplement their diets so this hypothesis is reasonable.

They then said: "However, in contrast to what we expected to find, children and adolescents with healthier nutrition, more active lifestyles, greater food security and greater health care access were more likely to use vitamin and mineral supplements." This is where we see clearly just how uninformed and out of touch these authors are. Their expectation here tells us more about them than about the pattern of children's supplement consumption.

It should have been quite well known to them that patterns of consumption of vitamin and mineral supplements follow socioeconomic position in society. The researchers said that children and adolescents who may face the greatest risks for vitamin and mineral deficiencies are those that actually take supplements less. Children in this group include those with less healthy nutrition and activity patterns, greater obesity, lower income, lower food security, poorer health, and lower health care access. It appears that they finally discovered the blindingly obvious.

Basically, parents with enough education and income know about the importance and can afford to purchase nutritional supplements, including vitamins and minerals. Sadly, those who are less well informed and have lower income -- yes, the very people with greater need -- tend to miss out on the benefits of supplements. Can this really have been such a surprise to these authors?

Inflammation is a normal protective and tissue repair response. However, chronic inflammation, brought about by an over-expression or lack of control of the normally protective mechanism, can lead to a range of inflammatory related diseases, including cardiovascular disease. The study, published recently in the Journal of Inflammation (Vol. 3), supplemented the diets of seven young, healthy volunteers (five men) for five days with Pycnogenol (200 mg). Blood samples were taken at day one after a 24 hour abstinence from flavonoid consumption, and again at day five.

After five days of supplementation the researchers found that activation of the pro-inflammatory molecule, nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-kB), was inhibited by about 15 per cent. “This study demonstrates Pycnogenol's ability to inhibit NF-kB and the pro-inflammatory molecules under its control. This reduced 'friendly-fire' incidents where the body's immune system turned inflammation on tissue,” said lead researcher, Petra Högger, from the University of Wurzburg. It should be noted that the product used was Pycnogenol, made exclusively by Horphag Research, who co-sponsored this study.

While the study has several obvious limitations, including the small sample population, lack of a placebo and no blinding, the authors noted that these results were in-keeping with other clinical data on the anti-inflammatory effects of the pine bark extract. The limitations are significant however and should not be lightly dismissed.

Finnish researchers have also reported that extracts from Scotch pine have potent anti-inflammatory effects and suggested that this extract could be used in supplements targeted at arthritis sufferers (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2004, Vol. 52, pp. 7532-7540).

Barb's article follows:

The is a summary of peanut allergy info so far Posted in Health, Peanut allergies on January 13th, 2009 - A basic review of what I've covered in my previous blogs concerning peanut allergy which can be deadly.

Hypothesis: Vaccinations are the leading cause of peanut allergy. Infant formula, infant vitamins, and antibiotics that contain peanut products directly or indirectly may be secondary causes.

1. Vaccines are given to create an immune response from the body. It only makes sense that the body treats anything in the vaccine as an invader that needs to have an antibody created to combat it. That is why we give vaccines. But if the vaccine has a trace of food in it such as egg or peanut, it only makes sense that the vaccine can cause a food allergy.

2. Peanut oil is used in vaccines in adjuvants or as a vaccine carrier. The ingredients of adjuvants or vaccine carriers are not listed individually on the package insert. So the physician would have no way of knowing that there was peanut oil in the vaccine.

3. Peanut allergy decreases in populations that have decreased percentage of vaccinated children. There are a number of studies that link vaccinations to allergies.

4. Peanut allergy is almost unknown in Israel. The population eats lots of peanuts. Israel produces sesame oil. Israel manufactures is own vaccines. Sesame is a major allergy there. Hypothesis: Sesame oil is used instead of peanut oil in the vaccines used in Israel.

5. Study that is frequently cited saying that Indonesia and Thailand people do not suffer from peanut allergies was erroneous. Many children in the study reacted to peanuts in the skin prick test. The study relied on parents of report food reactions. I found a Thai parent quoted on the Internet saying that her child had a peanut allergy. I also found a physician from Singapore stating that peanut allergy is a major problem there.

6. The "hygiene" theory points out that there is less food allergy in underdeveloped countries. They speculated that the people and environment is less clean so it is the early exposure to bacteria, etc. that protects against allergies. However, children as young as 8 months have been diagnosed with peanut allergy and it is only since 1990 that peanut allergies have become a huge problem. The populations in the underdeveloped countries are also not as compliant with childhood vaccinations which would account for less peanut allergy.

7. The United States and China are major producers of peanut oil and vaccinations. There are many patents for products used in vaccines that contain peanut oil.

8. The secondary causes of peanut allergy are due to young children having a "leaky gut", immature digestive system. Introducing foods too soon can lead to allergies. Medicines given with traces of peanut protein could lead to an allergy. Also antibiotics kill off good bacteria as well as bad and can lead to an overgrowth of yeast which can cause food allergy type problems. I don't know if any infant formula in the United States contains peanut oil. One website said it was more of a problem in Europe.

9. Our vaccinated animals are getting food allergies Dogs are allergic to peanuts. Searching the Internet - I found a wild elephant allergic to wheat; the elephant had been immunized. (Wheat germ oil is used as a carrier of vaccines. Wheat protein is used to manufacture vaccines/medicines.)

10. The statistics for allergies is appalling!! The allergy epidemic increased with every new mandate for more childhood immunizations.

11. How pure can we make peanut oil? I assume it is highly refined but it only would take a teeny weeny bit of peanut protein in a vaccine to create a problem. That is, of course, assuming that it is ONLY the peanut protein that causes the allergy. Using my "guessing" math, only 1 shot out of 1680 would need to be contaminated to create a peanut allergy in 1 in 70 people in Great Britain.

12. Vaccine adjuvants/ vaccine carriers contain many other oils/ingredients. These other ingredients could account for allergies to other foods. Fish oil is used. Shellfish can be mixed in with the fish by-products which are used to make fish oil. Wheat germ oil, corn oil, soy oil are used. Milk and eggs are also used in the production of vaccines.

I keep looking but so far, I have been unable to DISPROVE my hypothesis.

This month's main article by Dr Jenny Tylee considers the significant problem of air pollution within the home. There is plenty of research to confirm what is perfectly obvious -- people spend many hours every week inside their homes. Add to this number the additional hours spent inside other buildings and the level of exposure poses quite a problem.

This significant risk to health is all the more worrying because it is largely silent. People just don't realise what they are exposed to and what problems can result. Many people suffer poor health as a direct result from exposure to toxins found in the air inside their own homes. Might you be one of them? What can you do about the problem?

In this edition we consider the basics of how the body inactivates drugs. This is a very important part of how the body naturally attempts to maintain a detoxified state. Unfortunately many people suffer from either failures in this area or damage to this area. Both of these situations represent threats to wellbeing.

In answer to a subscriber's question we also address how to deal with allergies. This seems to be a question that's posed over and over again so there is obviously considerable need for information about effectively dealing with allergies without resorting to pharmaceutical antihistamines.

Further information in this month's publication considers natural antibiotics. Several are listed along with brief discussion on the importance of moving beyond the Big Pharma consumers' conditioned response of looking for "quick fix" and "magic bullet" solutions. Natural antibiotcs are extremely powerful and very effective without the downside risks and side effects associated with pharmaceutical antibiotcs, but they must be approached differently.
