One of the best articles I have ever seen dealing with osteoporosis was just published on April 9th, 2006. It was written by Canadian independent nurse practitioner, Ruth Ditchburn.

Consider the following plain talk about the more common myths.

Let us look at three myths about Osteoporosis:

• Myth # 1: Osteoporosis is a calcium deficiency disease: NOT TRUE. Osteoporosis is a disease of excessive calcium loss. Regardless of how much calcium a person consumes it is being lost from the bones at a much faster pace. 
• Myth # 2: Osteoporosis is an estrogen-deficiency disease: NOT TRUE. Osteoporosis starts long before estrogen levels fall and accelerates a few years after menopause. Estrogen cannot rebuild new bone and does not reverse osteoporosis. Women who are prescribed a non bio-identical hormone replacement therapy because they are menopausal, have had a hysterectomy or oophrectomy should really consider all the side affects of such a program and be aware that it will not improve their bone structure or prevent heart disease before commencing it. Many doctors recommend a bio-identical hormone replacement program prepared by a compounding pharmacists. Also consider the fact that osteoporosis is increasing in men as well and men are not put on hormone replacement therapy.
• Myth # 3: Osteoporosis is a disease of menopause: NOT TRUE. Osteoporosis begins five to twenty years prior to menopause while estrogen levels are still high. This disease only shows up in later life but is an insidious disease that starts several years prior.
